Is one of those off-the-beaten-orbit numbers that you'll perhaps be tickled you saw but won't just have you chirography where it hurts to Natural. Then, again Nourisher would very likely like it more than you, prone its old-fashioned (and, it must be said, inflated) notions of libidinous melodrama.
Still, in a once in a while when "dreamed-up melodrama" means "Nicholas Sparks," the idiosyncracies of Pandora and the Flying Dutchman , "Watching this cover is like entering a far-out and wonderful vision." One suspects author/administrator Lewin was more focused on the film's literary merits than anything else; a former English professor, he threads literary and reliable allusions throughout the detective story: rudimentary teller of tales Geoffrey Fielding (Harold Warrender) is a professorial archeologist and versification lover that can only be Lewin's surrogate.
Fielding is one of many, many men who elongated obsessively for Pandora Reynolds (Gardner), a former nightclub chorus-member now living in Esperanza, a Spanish seaport on the Mediterranean littoral. In her first site, Gardner establishes her warning rank by singing the hauntingly well done long explanation "How Am I to Certain?" (The long explanation was also recorded by Explicit Sinatra, who married Gardner in 1951 and divorced her in 1957; aware she was Sinatra's "one that got away" adds to Gardner's inscrutability, in hindsight.) These were the days, of routine, when "unmanly mystery" was not a feminist stir-motto but an unironic turn of phrase of the "goddess" archetype that put women on pedestals; though winningly couched here in Lewin's classicism (the skim is dotted with statuary and disjointed relics that Fielding studies), one wishes Pandora were a more fully painted nature. As it is, she's a horridly Neronic, cynical dream-doozy who knows her power and misuses it until kismet intervenes by plopping her rehabilitative unerring warmth in front of her.

Critics of this research are often accused of being politically mark, bleeding-heart liberals who attribute all wrongdoing to nasty nurturing. I am, I confess, a liberal, and almost 40 years ago I finished a weekend in a Florida jail after being busted for hitchhiking and resisting arrest (I stupidly tried to run away from the cops). But my objections to the born-to-be-bad meme are based not on my criminality or dogma but on the track record of scientific attempts to trace crime to biology. Claim after claim has been discredited, and so I'm skeptical when researchers hold that now they're finally getting things right.
One of the first biocriminologists was Cesare Lombroso, who in the late 19th century linked man's criminality to what he called "atavistic" physiological features. These included a prominent brow, jutting jaw, and "treat-shaped ears," which are also possessed by "savages and apes." In the early 20th century, Charles Davenport, go lame of the prestigious Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, expressed concerned that immigrants from southeastern Europe were "assumed to crimes of larceny, kidnapping, assault, murder, rape and sex immorality." Italians, Davenport asserted, were leaning to "crimes of personal violence," and "Hebrews" to "offenses against chastity."
