  • ANGLING: Reid top of the bill at Radley

Eight teams of six fished the third herd of this year’s Summer League on a still and very tough Thames at Radley.

The water still has virtually no flow and retains its brown algae tinge, but that didn’t prevent Neil Reid (Fox Match ISIS), who triumphed with 12.5.0 from the top end above the boathouse. He had perch and skimmers on worm over chop on the high at 7m.

Second was Martin Kirk (Turners) with 9.6.0 from the favoured downstream end peg. He had roach and small chub on the shaft and maggot at 13m.

Graham Williamson (Abingdon) was on the next peg and finished third with a similar bag on maggot and pole for 7.12.0.

Team-meet inform, Turners won easily with 38 points and now lead the league on 106.

The ‘school’ waters at the top of The Inebriated in Oxford fished really well for the five anglers contesting Oxford Bus AC’s latest match, with 35lb of fish caught.

Pete Clarke fished staff with caster to catch roach, bream, perch and a bonus 5.2.0 tench for a winning 15.3.0.

    About this book
In 'Apostate Watchdog, ' Radley draws from more than four hundred primary sources to detail the workings of the Confederate States Army Provost Wardress. Sanctioned by the Articles of War in 1861 to assist the South in the establishment of discipline over the vast numbers of hurriedly organized and untrained soldiers, the provost system became one of the most much praised and controversial components of the Confederated army.

    About this book
Over the career two decades, sweeping political changes and burgeoning new technologies have resulted in communities being increasingly defined in international as well as regional and national terms. Although the intellectual terra nova of world cultures remains essentially uncharted, this anthology of sixty-two stories from around the non-Euro-American world provides what Elisabeth Young-Bruehl calls "an basic map to the great wealth of literary works now being produced in, at once, the particular settings of the writers' experiences and the epidemic setting." Young-Bruehl finds that while the cultural diversity the stories exemplify is amazing, so too is the similarity in thematic terms of the concerns that this multiplicity presents. Thus she organized Global Cultures thematically to highlight and clarify how these worldwide cultures both join and diverge. A comprehensive general introduction outlines forces behind the transnational approach to literary survey and chapter introductions contextualize...

We lead, others follow, First Canadian Division, 1914-1918

    About this book
1st Line, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) was the first division ever put in the field by the Dominion of Canada. In this book, detailed studies are made of training methods, segment organization, equipment, staff duties and procedures, and personnel problems. There are copious references to delve into documents and an extensive bibliography for each chapter. The primary focus of this study is the infantry, examining the effort of individual units and their commanders, noting the improvement in staff duties as the war progressed. It also examines the landed British contribution to Canadian skill at arms. Staff officers were with few exceptions British, since Canada had almost no trained crozier officers at the beginning of the war, and only a few even at the end. The final chapters show how all the training, staff work, organizational changes and troupe work came together in 1918 during the battle of Amiens, Canal du Nord and the final offensive.
