Centerville Elementary deals with growing pains, relief in sight
At 3 p.m. at Centerville Fundamental School on Monday afternoon, minivans and SUV’s started lining up outside. At 3:10 p.m., a steady brook of parents walked toward the Urbana school, filling in an area behind the vehicles. And at 3:20 p.m., a carefully organized formlessness began as the school filtered out around 1,000 students to the rightful hands.
Stephanie Neuben and neighbor Karen Miles were some of the walkers retrieving their children from the first day of opinion.
They said they had conflicted emotions on the first day for their kids. “Stress, [the] unknown,” said Neuben whose son Justin, 7, is a new surrogate-grader.
“Bittersweet…definitely,” added Miles who has a daughter Samantha, 5, who just started kindergarten in the same construction with older sister Hannah, 6, a first-grader.
Both have children in the regular classrooms in the school, which is also using 11 portables to control the nearly 1,000 elementary school students in the school built for a capacity of 675.
