With plans to hire, borough officials want to junk residency rule
The starting compensation for an officer in Pompton Lakes is $35,000, Struyk said, so the department would save at least half that amount per office-holder by hiring veterans.
"This will be beneficial," said Struyk, who promised to enact the policy as soon as the directory approves it. "It will save the taxpayers money."
He said Pompton Lakes is a "civil service borough" that first attempts to hire employees from the town, then the county, then does a statewide search. The department plans imminently to rent two officers, and possibly more in the future.
Ragno, the borough attorney, said he discovered in his review of local ordinances that Pompton Lakes was out of compliance with a status statute that prohibits residency requirements, so he drafted the repeal ordinance.
State statute 40A:14-122, which prohibits residency requirements, was put into operate in February 1972. Mitchell Sklar, executive director of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Patrol, sees pros and cons in municipal employee residency requirements.
