  • A Night for Saints and Sinners

    , At Glucksman Ireland Household on May 31, she explained that Miss Gilhooley, the romantic librarian in the story “Send My Roots Rain,” had tried to order literary evenings but found that “people only came because of the wine and the canapés after.”

    There was a blow up of sheepish laughter as her audience recognized the meta-ness of the scene. Members of Ireland Assembly always look forward to the conviviality of its generous post-lecture wine and cheeses – and some nights with considerably more fervor than others. She announced her foresee for the night.

    “I’ll read you two little bits of the stories, and then we’ll have questions, which are always more inviting.” Really? Q&As interesting? Isn’t that what happens just before the canapés, with yawns and posturing on both sides of the lectern?

    O’Brien – delicious as it is to say Edna, as we all were after, because of her tremendous

    Can you comment on this poem of Edna St. Vincent Millay?

    by Edna St. Vincent Millay

    What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
    I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
    Under my genius till morning; but the rain
    Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
    Upon

    It's about the old age of a lady fondly remembering all the dalliances of her youth. She mourns for those times and rather than dwelling on her present is enmeshed in her own days of old, so she can sing no more.

    How depressing.

    What do you think of this Sonnet by Edna St. Vincent Millay, on the importance of love? :-)?

    "Admiration is not all: it is not meat nor drink
    Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
    Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
    And rise and sink and begin and sink again;
    Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,

    Edna is one of my favorite poets. Here she is talking about inclination not being sufficient to meet all of mankinds needs. Many people know that she was jilted many times in her life by her lovers. Both man's and female. She was exceptionally young

    I need two examples of poetic devices in this poem. Would Rhyme be considered on of them?

    What would be the other one?

    Torment

    About this book
    When You Tattle It Now, Just Like New is a collection of essays about stories: about hearing, sharing, and recording them, and sometimes even becoming characters in them. These essays, which contextualize stories within anthropology, course from Robin Ridington and Jillian Ridington’s decades of work with the Athapaskan-speaking Dane-zaa people, who complete in Canada's Peace River area. The essays in part 1 feature the Ridingtons’ audio profession as well as Jillian’s reflections on her relationships with Dane-zaa women. The authors use a narrative style to lead the reader to an familiarity of First Nations' oral and written traditions. The essays in parts 2 and 3 are more scholarly and comparative and draw on ethnographic incident. They speak to one or more theoretical issues and discuss First Nations traditions beyond the Dane-zaa, but always from within the context of shared ethnographic testimony. Students of anthropology, folklore, and Native studies can hear samples of audio compositions...

    About this book
    Fish die. Seagulls starve. Economies wither. And that's upstanding in the coastal villages. El Nino--"The Christ Child"--and its climatological opposite, La Nina, are global events so weighty and strange they virtually have personalities. Many remember the El Nino seasons of 1982-83 and 1997-98, which brought floods, tornadoes, droughts, and snow to extraordinary locales. Increased study of these Tropical Pacific phenomena, also known as ENSO (the El Nino and Southern Oscillation), has now enabled scientists to foresee the ENSO state as much as 12 to 18 months in advance and has helped to shape weather prognosis in general. Here, the basic causes and effects of El Nino and La Nina are carefully chronicled for anyone in search of exact and current information on these natural phenomena. Chapters are devoted to the history of ENSO; its influence on extensive weather and on the United States, including the ecosystem; and how governments and industries worldwide are utilizing new unwell data to harness...
