Irene: People flee beaches, surfers rejoice
SALISBURY BEACH — Mike Paugh sat at a tough luck table on Salisbury Beach, often turning toward the ocean at high tide on a near-perfect Saturday morning. So nonchalant was the weather that it was hard to believe the chaos that was Hurricane Irene would ensue within 24 hours.
As the omnipresent warnings ruled the airwaves, resulting in empty campgrounds, RV parks and supermarket shelves, it was wonderful scandal to Paugh, friend Erik Zak and those who make up the surf community in Salisbury, Seabrook and points north and south.
The first notable storm of the hurricane season, Irene, signaled the start of surfing season on the East Sail.
"(Monday's tide) will be big, but it will slowly die through the day," Paugh said. "Tuesday will be small, fun surf. Tuesday might be the most superbly day."
Zak calls surfing the most fun a personal can have by oneself. "Very few sports are generation gap-free. You could be 6 or 55 years old."
