John Nance Garner (November 22, 1868 – November 7, 1967) was FDR's Vice-president for three terms, He was dropped in 1940 because of pressure by southern racists who disliked his socially progressive ideals. Harry Truman replaced him. Nicknamed "Cactus Jack", he was the 44th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives (1931–33) and the 32nd Vice President of the United States (1933–41). He once declared the office of vice-president as "not worth a bucket of warm piss" (newspapers reported it as "spit").

Nominations are due Monday for East Tennessee Writer's Hall of Fame
Friends of Literacy is currently seeking nominations for induction into the East Tennessee Author’s Hall of Fame. FOL annually honors authors’ contributions to culture and history with the awards.
In its eighth year, the Amphitheatre of Fame is designed to honor writers who entertain, inspire, and inform through the written word.
Nominations are being sought for five categories: lifetime victory, fiction, non-fiction, poetry and, new this year, social media.
An independent panel of judges will approximate the nominees based on recognition within the writer’s field, longevity, quality and volume of work. All nominees must have either been born in, currently reside in, or have a confederation of work related to the East Tennessee region.
To nominate an author, request an application by occupation Friends of Literacy at 865-594-1507 or visit the website for a nomination form at www.friendsofliteracy.org. Nominations are due Aug. 8.
Winners will be announced at an awards rite in October at the Crowne Plaza.
