Вряд ли он был обрадован путешествием из Петербурга во Владивосток, но служба есть служба, и место её прохождения не выбирают. Макс Кюсс влюбился в неё с первого взгляда, но шансов у него, естественно, не было - унтер-офицер не мог конкурировать с полковником, и полковничья жена никогда не ушла бы от мужа к "нижнему чину", а устраивать "адюльтеры" в войсковой части, где все у всех на виду - дело довольно затруднительное, тем более, что начальник мог за это подчинённого в порошок стереть. Под впечатлениями своей безнадёжной любви Макс Кюсс написал вальс, и назвал его "Амурские волны", причём название было с двойным смыслом, ведь Амур - это не только дальневосточная река, Амур - это ещё и древнеримский бог любви, и название "Амурские волны" символизировало несчастную любовь, уплывающую далеко по волнам…
