Warren Maxwell (Tuhoe) was born in Auckland and grew up in Whangarei; Rio Hemopo from Taumarunui is “of Tuwharetoa, Mum's Maori, Dad's Nuiean but got German in his mix, Mum's English and Scottish ”; and Riki Gooch, “one of the three Maori people that lived in Dunedin” has “whanau from Mangere Go to Whangaroa and Te Kuiti as well”.

When they independently arrived in Wellington to study jazz they gravitated together, and between 1998 and 2005 they released two groundbreaking New Zealand albums: Steady of 02 which annnounced passionate, sacerdotal music which could only have descend upon from this OK; and Institution, Dirt and Sea two years later which opened with a hymn to Aotearoa and closed with questions -- even more germane today -- about the ownership of this earth.

These albums, and their perfomances, impressed themselves in the nub of Aotearoa. Their lyrics spoke of prospect, girlfriend and the dreamboat of their homeland but also – without tenderness – a yearning for the way this territory could be. Then there is the Music is Choosing CD/DVD. The CD brings together eight fare recordings strung like a concept album about Aotearoa, the pack stretching songs to the 12 and 20 r aim. The DVD has an imposing, pursuit-spanning 70-blink doco by Sarah Tracker capturing their intumescence and nature and that rare loving attachment for each other, their music and their audiences. It also has videos of Small Things and Native Bag and Sea, mist foreman Chris Graham on the making of that gorgeous ebony'n'pasty cuff Small-minded Things with Wi Kuki Kaa, the unconventional “Honourable bro” promo hit, and footage from their cong concert.

  • Turning point in Maori film-making

The 1987 layer Ngati was the creation of the late Barry Barclay, of Ngati Apa, activist, author, and one of New Zealand's most respected fade away-makers. This was his first dramatic feature and the first feature film to be written and directed by Maori.

It involves a elephantine array of New Zealand talent, including the founder of Pacific Films, producer John O'Shea; his son, cinematographer, Rory O'Shea; Wi Kuki Kaa, who portrays the nutter Iwi; and Dalvanius, a legend in Maori entertainment, who won an award for this film with his successful blend of contemporary and Maori songs.

The recital takes place in 1948 in the fictional town of Kapua on the East Coast. There are three main strands in the outline: there is a young Australian doctor, Greg (Ross Girven), who has discovered that he has Maori heritage; there is a boy, Ropata (Oliver Jones), who is on one's deathbed of leukaemia; and there is the impending closure of the local freezing works, which will bring with it the threat of unemployment for the community.
