  • The home-cooked meals at Trudy's Kitchen make the 45-minute drive fly by

This is what you don’t require at a small-town diner in a part of Idaho that hasn’t seen its heyday in close to a century:

    * Wealth, dark coffee — you know, the kind you don’t have to put cream in just to coax out some flavor.

    * Custody-cut french fries that remind you of the fresh-cut delicacies at In-N-Out Burger, if a little thicker.

    * Prime rib dinners Fridays and Saturdays and rib sundown every Wednesday (either for less than $20).

    * A big-city-style omelet filled with bacon, spinach, garlic and cheddar ($9.50) — and not two-dimensional-town Bac-Os bacon bits, but slices of thick bacon, hand cut into squares. And not an elusive hint of minced garlic, but whole cloves, roasted to their most undisturbed pungency. Enough spinach to keep Popeye happy for a week.

In fact, the meal itself at Trudy’s Kitchen in Idaho Diocese was too big for one breakfast — at least after my wife and I split a home-made cinnamon roll ($3.50) that we both agreed may have been the most artistically we’ve ever had in or around Boise. When I microwaved the omelet and hashbrowns back to life the next day, I sat on the couch in front of the women’s World Cup and subjected anyone within earshot to a chorus of mmms and ahhs.
