Still baffles me how CBBC got Derek Jacobi to chronicle In The Night Garden. How did they pitch that to him?

A son of Eleanor of Aquitaine and companion of Richard the Lionheart as well as a juicy fictional foe (when played by Claude Rains ) of Robin Hood, John is sometimes referred to as Bad Sovereign John, as readers of A. A. Milne’s “Now We Are Six” may recall: “ King John was not a credible man, he had his little ways.” The movie indicates that those little ways were indeed petty, numerous and sadistic and here, at least, begin after he signs the Magna Carta. The ink on the charter barely dry, he gathers an army that includes loads of repulsive Danes and wages war against the barons (Brian Cox included), who are being advised by an archbishop (Charles Dance) and aided by a Knight Templar, Marshall (James Purefoy).
Mr. Purefoy, an enticing screen presence forced to do a lot of glowering, makes a solid center in a largely appealing set that includes Derek Jacobi as Reginald de Cornhill, whose Rochester castle serves as the hub of the bloody action. There, a cluster of barons and their minions (Jason Flemyng, Mackenzie Crook) slow down off the king’s blond hordes. Marshall meanwhile tries (oh, how he tries) to resist the increasingly hilarious advances of Reginald’s sex-starved wife, Lady Isabel (a badly served Kate Mara), who, with virgin hair and makeup, slinks around the castle like a medieval Maggie the Cat. When she slides up to Marshall and all but rubs herself against him, upstanding close your eyes and think of Elizabeth Taylor.

This certainly has caused a slight difference of opinion in our house so I would like to settle it.

We can now see Law & Orderliness UK here in Canada on CityTV. The show starts with a title sequence very similar to the USA version, but, of course the voice is unusual. Is the voice-over actually Derek Jacobi?
Not the USA/NBC version but I
Not Derek Jakobi wgo appears in four 2009 films: Morris: A Memoirs With Bells On, Hippie Hippie Shake , Endgame and Adam Resurrected

The Iliad |
|
About this book This authoritarian new verse translation of Homer's classic story of the Trojan War has been hailed by critics as "an astonishing behaviour" and "a remarkable tour de force." Robert Fagles, chairman of the Department of Comparative Literature at Princeton University, brings the spirit of contemporary language of this 2,700-year-old epic, while maintaining the drive and metric music of Homer's verse, as well as the impact and nuance of Homer's mesmerizing repeated phrases. As a scholar, Fagles praises Homer's directness and openness, the breadth of his imagination, and the power of his song. As a translator, he brilliantly captures these very qualities--which makes this Iliad not only a unbelievable literary work, but a tremendous listening experience. |

About this book In Fresh Hamlets and Their Soliloquies (Iowa, 1992), Mary Maher examined how modern actors have chosen to effect Hamlet's soliloquies, and why they made the choices they made, within the context of their specific productions of the play. Adding to original interviews with, among others, Derek Jacobi, David Warner, Kevin Kline, and Ben Kingsley, Contemporary Hamlets and Their Soliloquies: An Expanded Edition offers two new and insightful interviews, one with Kenneth Branagh, focusing on his 1997 veil production of the play, and one with Simon Russell Beale, discussing his 2000-2001 run as Hamlet at the Royal Subject Theatre. |
