UK researchers release draft sequence coverage of wheat genome

UK researchers salvation drawing progression coverage of wheat genome

27th August 2010

A party of UK researchers, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Scrutinization Caucus (BBSRC), has publicly released the first succession coverage of the wheat genome. The manumission is a offbeat towards a fully annotated genome and makes a informative contribution to efforts to carry universal grub pledge and to raise the competitiveness of UK agriculture.

The genome sequences released comprise five announce-throughs of a innuendo strain of wheat and give scientists and breeders access to 95% of all wheat genes. This is among the largest genome projects undertaken, and the hasty buyers let go of the observations is expected to accelerate significantly the use of the facts by wheat bringing-up companies.

The troupe embroiled with Prof Neil Hired hall and Dr Anthony Classroom at the University of Liverpool, Prof Keith Edwards and Dr Gary Barker at the University of Bristol and Prof Mike Bevan at the John Innes Hub, a BBSRC-funded Society.

  • Biological switch underlies memory of winter in plants

, Which it inherits from its parents, a new study has found.

The work was led by Professor Martin Howard and Professor Caroline Dean at the John Innes Centre.

“There are quite a few examples that we now cognizant of of where the activity of genes can be affected in the long term by environmental factors,” said Professor Dean.

“And in some cases the habitat of an individual can actually affect the biology or physiology of their offspring but there is no change to the genome sequence.”

The get used the example of how plants “remember” the length of the cold winter patch in order to exquisitely time flowering so that pollination, development, seed dispersal and germination can all chance at the appropriate time.

“We already knew quite a lot about the genes involved in flowering and it was clear that something goes on in winter that affects the timing of flowering, according to the to the fullest extent a finally of the cold period,” said Professor Howard.

    What is John Innes (spelling?)?

You can get compost and things that say 'with John Innes' (I'm true that's not how it's spelt though) or is it something that I've misheard?
Sorry to ask such a daft question!

Will it really make a difference if I use John Innes No1 instead of John Innes Seed for planting my seeds?

I'm blaming my other half for picking up the off the beam kind...

Not in effect, the seed compost will be a little finer and have less nutrients in but your seeds will germinate just fine in J.I. No.1.
