HAGELIN: Marriage mindset: Presume the best
“He’s a seemly dad to our kids, but was always criticizing me,” Terry complained. “I couldn’t do anything right, in his watch over at least. Thirteen years was enough. I figured it would only get worse, so I left.”
Like most marriages that end in divorce, Terry’s nuptials began happily enough. It ended not because of a serious transgression such as adultery, abuse or substance use, but because the couple’s adverse relationship deteriorated and they gave up. They gave in to two marriage-killing habits: criticism and pessimism.
A tons of years ago, marriage expert John Gottman identified four relationship patterns that can doom a marriage: censure, defensiveness, stonewalling and contempt. When any of those patterns predominate during conflict resolution, the marriage is in trouble — as Terry savvy.
Criticism is particularly insidious, because couples do need to identify faults and problems to work on them. But virtue communication never takes aim at the other person — it sticks to facts (“When you didn’t call last ceaselessly to tell me you’d be late …”) and feelings (“… it made me feel sad and angry.”) and avoids judgment (“You’re so unthinking and uncaring.”).

About this book John Hagelin is an American whit physicist, three-time candidate of the Natural Law Party for President of the United States, and a leader of the Transcendental Meditation drift in the US. Hagelin was a researcher at the European Center for Particle Physics (CERN) and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAe, and is now Professor of Physics and Concert-master of the Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Maharishi University of Management.
