COLLEGE STATION — The Cooper Cougars pulled out four consecutive victories Saturday to progress to the consolation championship game of the 7-on-7 State Championship.
After going 1-2 in Friday's pool call attention to, the Cougars advanced through the bracket at Texas A&M's Penberthy Intramural Fields by beating Buda Hays, Austin Bowie, Coppell and Houston Langham Runnel with each game decided by seven points or less before losing 46-26 to Rosenberg Terry at Kyle Players.
"The guys had a meeting (Friday) night and realized they didn't want to play like they had played," Cooper 7-on-7 carriage Kelvin Kelley said. We told them we didn't do anything different with the scheme, we didn't do anything different with the personnel. They went out there and went after what they wanted. With that in temper, that's going to build some good continuity going into the fall.
"We looked like we did in the Abilene competition this morning. We got back into a rhythm on offense and got some consistency on defense. Fred Lawrence and Josh Bowman both had titanic interceptions for us in the early games. Victor Cruz got one in the (semifinal). Those guys really played better on defense, getting us stops. Offensively, we got that consistency again."
