Sojourner Truth ~ Black History Month Greeting Card

In honor of Black History Month, this greeting card depicts Sojourner Truth, an indomitable abolitionist and civil rights activist. From The African American Almanac, 10th Ed., Gale: "Born Isabella Baumfree in Ulster County, New York, around 1797, she was freed by the New York State Emancipation Act of 1827 and lived in New York City for a time. "After taking the name Sojourner Truth, which she felt God had given her, she assumed the "mission" of spreading "the Truth" across the country. She became famous as an itinerant preacher, drawing huge crowds with her oratory (and some said 'mystical gifts') wherever she appeared. "She became one of an active group of black women abolitionists, lectured before numerous abolitionist audiences, and was friends with such leading white abolitionists as James and Lucretia Mott and Harriet Beecher Stowe. "With the outbreak of the Civil War she raised money to purchase gifts for the soldiers, distributing them herself in the camps. She also helped African Americans who had escaped to the North to find habitation and shelter. "Age and ill health caused her to retire from the lecture circuit, and she spent her last days in a sanatorium in Battle Creek, Michigan."QUESTIONS? regella@rocketmail.com

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A proposition to change the way Wausau's Park Department works will be getting a second look this week.
Alderman Bill Nagel asked the borough's Park and Rec committee to examine the current partnership with the county parks department. He says there could be outlay savings involved by instead partnering with other municipalities rather than the county. “The city and the county have unique park needs. The city has urban needs like pools and ball diamonds, rather than the county forests and trails.”
Nagle is proposing to either team-mate up with other municipalities like Weston or Schofield, or to pull parts of the Parks Department into the Public Works Conditional on.
Parks and Rec Chair Ed Gale says the move isn't out of the question. “The two sides really are different animals.” Some concerns about the arrangement would be how to handle training for public works employees to make that switch, and where the funding would go in any changes to the sphere structure of the city.
