The 53rd annual Palace Rock Fair kicks off Thursday promising fun for all over its three-day run. This year's theme is "A Family A' Fair," highlighting the many generations who constitute up each fair, from children showing animals to adult organizers.
This year's grand marshal is a case in sharp end. Wileen Davidsion has been the rabbit superintendent for more than 25 years, according to fair supervisor Yvonne Knuth.
New this year is what organizers are occupation the Quarter Arcade for children. It includes several games and booths, such as face-painting and ring fling, all priced at 25 cents. Other children's activities include pony rides, a giant slither and a booth where kids can have the speed of their baseball pitches clocked. Prices vary on those events. Yvonne Fair (October 21, 1942 - March 6, 1994) was an African American chorus-member, best known for her 1976 recording of "It Should Have Been Me." Born as Flora Yvonne Coleman in Richmond, Virginia, Fair got her start as a latter-day fellow of the re-formulated Chantels and the James Brown Revue. While performing with Brown, she recorded the song "I Found You," which he later re-worked into his own signature hit "I Got You (I Guess Good)." She signed to Motown Records in the early 1970s as a result of her work with Chuck Jackson and she appeared in a bush-league role as a chanteuse in the film, Lady Sings the Blues. Fair then joined up with producer Norman Whitfield for a series of singles in a untiring funk vein: "Love Ain't No Toy," "Walk Out the Door If You Wanna," and her cover version of "Funky Music Sho' 'Nuff Turns Me On."
