The chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer tells John Plummer he is fa an especially difficult communications challenge
Mark Flannagan has one of the more difficult communications challenges in the voluntary sector - exasperating to get people to talk about blood, excrement and bowels.
Flannagan was appointed chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer in June last year and speedily realised that people were dying because they were less willing to discuss the disease than they were other forms of cancer.
"Bowel cancer is in all likelihood one of the last taboos in society," he says. "It's about bottoms and poo, which are not subjects we like to talk about at the dinner table."
Bowel cancer is the impaired-biggest cancer killer. Only 7 per cent of people diagnosed at stage four of the illness survive for five years. But 93 per cent of people diagnosed at make up one survive for this long.
