Olbrzymi sukces „Egzorcysty” Williama Friedkina (1973), jak również skrajne reakcje widzów adaptacji powieści Williama Petera Blatty’ego, sprawiły, że wielu producentów uważniej zaczęło spoglądać na możliwości oferowane przez filmowy antipathy. Jednym z tych producentów był Irwin Yablans, w którego głowie narodził się zarys fabuły o psychopacie eliminującym z grona żywych opiekunki do dzieci. Wedle początkowych foreseeów, film miał stanowić luźną kontynuację „Czarnych świąt” Boba Clarka (1974) – dreszczowca opowiadającego o bożonarodzeniowych zmaganiach mieszkanek stancji z pałającym żądzą (mordu) stalkerem. Niestety, okrojony budżet planowanej produkcji wymusił redukcję czasu akcji do jednej doby, ale za to bardzo szczególnej – przypadającej na święto Halloween. Autorami scenariusza zostali John Carpenter, któremu w udziale przypadł także stołek reżysera, oraz jego ówczesna sympatia, Debra Hill. Razem
