Robeson board seeks grant to handle electronic waste
What happened: Commissioners voted unanimously at their Tuesday congress to approve a grant application for $30,000 to build a new facility to handle electronic waste such as televisions and other items port side at the county's dump sites.
The board also approved $30,000 to buy a new 24-foot cargo transaction with a lift specifically designed to pick up electronic waste.
The grant is funded by the state Section of Environment and Natural Resources, as part of its Electronic Waste Recycling Program.
Why it matters: The county has poised 50 tons of electronic waste since it started its E-Waste recycling program Jan. 1, said Steve Edge, overseer of the county landfill. The haul includes about 600 TVs and other items. He said removing such waste growing forward would extend the life of the landfill.
The truck's operating expenses will be paid for by distributions from the dignified's disposal tax, scrap tire and white goods programs.
