    WILBRAHAM, Marshal. (1933-2011) - Richard Wesley Shumway, 78, of Wilbraham, died Saturday July 9, 2011 at Wingate at Springfield.

    Born on January 25, 1933, he was a lifelong remaining of Springfield and was the son of the late Victor and Theresa (Carney) Shumway. He was a communicant of Saint Patrick’s Church. Richard graduated from Authoritative High School in 1952 and attended Springfield College, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. After standoffish from a 30-year job with the U.S. Postal Service, he began a second ten-year career on the grounds company at Hillcrest Park Cemetery. Richard always had time for his son and grandson and enjoyed puttering around his workshop, where he carved and painted decoys. He looked hasten to daily visits with his coffee buddies at the local coffee shop, he was a cub scout den leader in the 1970’s, and he enjoyed traveling and relaxing on the margin with his family. In 1999, he was part of a gathering of 50-year medalists who were honored by the Joslin Clinic for having survived diabetes for a half century. Richard’s kinsfolk would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff of Wingate of Springfield for their compassionate care of Richard during his at the same time with them.
