Stamford company learns to cope with slow economy
Construction companies were hit exhausting by the economic downturn, and one of them has adapted by diversifying and developing other revenue sources.
The economy was strong when Stamford-based Olympic Construction LLC began as a all-inclusive contracting and construction management firm in 2002, said Susan D'Elia , co-founder of the business with her mollify, Michael, but the crash of 2008 forced them to think about ways they could offset the decline in construction receipts.
"We came off a couple of really big years after we started in 2002, but then the economy took a nosedive. A patient asked if we knew of anyone who could manage his home in the back country of Greenwich, and we said `yes, us'," said D'Elia, an attorney and one of a seven-myself staff.
That response led to the establishment of Atlas Property Management in 2008, which has earned $450,000 in yield since its start.
"It's enough that it's a viable business. We've picked up a few houses and businesses," D'Elia said, adding that Atlas has worked with compass banks to make improvements on foreclosed homes in preparation for their sale.
