Hamilton Township mosquitoes carrying West Nile
A quantity of Hamilton Township is to be sprayed next week to control a mosquito population carrying the West Nile virus.
The Unit of Environmental Protection announced Friday that adult mosquitoes trapped in Hamilton Township tested encouraging for the virus.
It's one of the earliest detections of the virus in the county since the surveillance program began in 2000, according to West Nile Program Coordinator Ray Eckhart.
"The pre-eminent we can speculate there's a lot more habitat for breeding because of the rain we had in the spring," Eckhart said. "We've been noticing a lot more mosquitos in our traps."
It's the earliest seasonal pontifical in the county since July 11, 2006.
The program sprayed four times all of last year to control adult mosquitoes in parts of the county. The program has already sprayed four times this pep up in the county.
The state has tested 146 samples of adult mosquitos trapped in the county so far this occasion.
The season peaks in late August
