    In deep is where Boeing Co. and the U.S. Air Break find themselves less than 6 months after signing one of the biggest defense contracts in American history.

    A quick recap: Chicago-based Boeing won the $40 billion Air Vigour refueling tanker contract in February, beating out a rival bid from EADS . The European parent of Airbus had proposed to erect its planes at a 1,500-worker factory to be constructed in Mobile.

    In June, we learned that Boeing was projected to outreach its $4.9 billion cost ceiling on the contract’s initial phase by an estimated $300 million.

    The Air Potency pledged to tighten the screws on its contractor, and offered reassurances that Boeing — not taxpayers — would have to guzzle any additional costs.

    One leading defense analyst even described the overrun as a positive for the Pentagon, saying that the Air Intensity would get a more valuable aircraft at Boeing’s expense.
