  • Use Price Guide to Save on Groceries

Consumer advocates underwrite comparison shopping when choosing big-ticket items, but doing so also can offer a savings on frequently purchased, and less costly, items.

"Groceries are an warning," said Mary Meck Higgins, K-State Research and Extension nutrition specialist.

In choosing groceries, consumers can be swayed by an advertised reduced in price on the market that may not be the better bargain, said Higgins, who recommends creating a personal price guide with a brief list of frequently-purchased items such as milk, peanut butter, the family's favorite cereals, bread, juices and canned vegetables and fruits.

Higgins' beadroll (in a small notebook) has grown to include dozens of items and serves as a quick reference in recognizing good deal prices and knowing when to stock up - and save.

Checking prices at more than one store can be helpful, said Higgins, who recommends creating a disconnect column for each store and listing prices for like products on the same line.

Consumers are encouraged to tuck their shopping roster into the guide and compare prices before buying, she said. Using the guide regularly should help consumers consider which store has the best prices on preferred items and observe trends in seasonal sales and promotional discounts.

Scotland's land girls, breeches, bombers and backaches

Scotland's land girls, breeches, bombers and backaches

    About this book
Soul in the Scottish Women's Land Army (SWLA) is revealed in this book by some of the many women who gave reviving service to their nation at a time of national emergency. For many, wartime service on the farm was preferable to calling in a munitions factory or their everyday working life in a shop or insurance office. To others, service in the SWLA afforded them the break to indulge their love of rural life by working in the fields and with animals. While many of the tasks carried out by the 'Motherland Girls' were the same across Scotland, indeed across the United Kingdom, individual circumstances meant that each 'Girl' had a different 'War'. In the pep up accounts included here in memoir and interview, we learn of life as a Land Girl living in a hostel working on many farms, and of person living and working on a single farm. We hear of tearful goodbyes to parents and childhood and of sunny encounters with Royalty and cocktails.
