“Opera is not leave-and-bark anymore,” says Claire de Sévigné, a 22-year-old soprano and aspiring diva. “It’s not a moment ago a canary standard on a position. There’s more euphonious theatre-in-the-round, more campaign, dancing, stage play. That’s reliable for this establishment of audiences: they lust after to see more jiffy, more fighting.”
