  • Volunteers help residents near Mission Espada

Every morning in front of a statuette of their patron saint, St. Vincent de Paul , a dozen volunteers pray in a stone building near the historic Trade Espada.

Once home to missionaries, the rooms now are occupied by freezers, canned goods and clothes donated by St. Matthew's Eclectic Church . And every third Tuesday, the volunteers distribute 70 bags of groceries, bought from the San Antonio Scoff Bank, to seniors and low-income families that live near the mission.

The program is a joint elbow-grease of various parishes, said Margie Jimenez , manager of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul distribution program.

“If Congress cuts back on programs, then it cuts the Victuals Bank and it's a domino effect,” she said. “We can't afford to buy any place else.”

The volunteers have illnesses like diabetes, but they said the occupation keeps them going.

“We're all broken from one thing or another,” said Jimenez, 52, a 30-year volunteer. “We're like a household; we know each other's problems.”
