Macbeth, Glyndebourne - The Arts Desk - Arts Reviews, Features and ...

Is full of fleetingly weird moments. Halfway through the regicidal Bruised Act, we come upon a fortress airports skycap gibbering on about the bodily consequences of draught - "nose-painting, siesta and urine". Verdi's opera mostly shuns these vignettes for the bigger, more concentratedly darker essence. The music works itself up into an ornamented urge and for the most part broods on low orchestral colourings. There is nothing waggish about a free encourage of it. Why Richard Jones has therefore unfaltering to send the whole aspect up for Glyndebourne in a series of dull gags is line baffling and rather irritating. The first gag is the set itself (conspirator, Ultz): a playschool-like, psychadelic mansion of bloodless bricks and dispirited mortar, empty but for a stopgap, en-tartaned hut on the side, where the Monarch resides, or more accurately reasonable hangs out. There's scaffolding at the back (don't ask why), which the choruses procession up once or twice in the first half. Things proceed in a leaden-footed, absolute, nothingy way...

    About this book
Paul Atkinson explores the strange world of opera through his fieldwork with the internationally known Welsh National Opera company. He demonstrates how cultural phenomena are produced and enacted by entrancing us on stage and behind the scenes into the collective social action that goes into the realization of an opera. Atkinson's labour will appeal to anthropologists and sociologists who study the performance arts, as well as to those engaged in theatre arts, opera, and music.
