Former Naugatuck Resident, 19, Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter
A 19-year-old former Naugatuck dwelling accused in the fatal stabbing of a friend in Waterbury last year is facing up to 18 years in detention.
Justin Martinez, of Waterbury, pleaded guilty to a single count of manslaughter with intent to producer harm Tuesday during an appearance in Waterbury Superior Court.
Martinez, who attended Naugatuck Elaborate School and lived in the borough until 2010 , was arrested on a murder charge on Nov. 21 after police said he stabbed another man, Gary Dias, also 19, during a broil that started over a wallet with $70 inside.
Dias, of Waterbury, died from the injuries in the apartment where the stabbing occurred protect said. The two youths reportedly were acquaintances prior to the incident, and Dias was dating Martinez’ sister, court files circumstantial.
The reduced charge from murder to manslaughter means a lesser penalty for Martinez. The state recommended a 20-year suspended judgement and between 13-18 years incarceration, according to the clerk's office. The defendant is also facing three years of probation following his chokey release, the clerk's office said.
