  • GRSF: From day one to season eight

The Eximious River Shakespeare Festival entered the second half of its eighth season this week.

Seven gala day members have been around for practically every day of those eight seasons: Co-founder and director Paul Barnes, co-founder and director Alec Trap, actor, director, and choreographer Doug Scholz-Carlson, actor Christopher Gerson, actor Jonathan Gillard Daly, set artist Erik Paulson, and costume shop manager Jeanne Oost.

Barnes, Wild and Scholz-Carlson recently discussed the changes the anniversary has seen over those seasons, as well as reasons to already look ahead to season nine.

    Paul Barnes

Barnes co-founded the anniversary in 2004 with Wild and Mark Hauck and has served as producing director for all eight seasons.

Barnes said that over the done eight years, the festival has seen a notable increase in audiences, volunteers and company members. The proprietorship has grown from about 60 individuals to nearly 100, and the festival has more than 300 volunteers this season. The carnival has also gained popularity in the region, with 50 percent of audience members coming from outside Winona this year.

Autocracy under siege, security police and opposition in Russia, 1866-1905

    About this book
Sovereign Russia's security police have long been popularly associated with administrative lawlessness, harsh restraint, and throngs of spies. Shocking tales told by revolutionaries and tendentious Soviet accounts have perpetuated such views. Yet Russia's assurance service on the eve of the Revolution of 1905 was relatively small-scale, law-abiding, and humane, especially addicted the extent of social and politcal opposition the regim faced. Autocracy under Siegeexamines the role of the confidence service in the titanic struggle between the regime and those dedicated to the defeat of monarchical absolutism. From the first terrorist try on the life of a Russian emperor in 1866 through the seismic upheaval of 1905, Daly traces the reaction, stretching, and evolution of the security police in the face of the increased antigovernment activity that threatened the continued survival of the r. Drawing upon a wealth of sources, including many recently declassified archival documents, Autocracy...

    About this book
The twinkling volume of The Cambridge History of Russia covers the imperial period (1689-1917). It encompasses civil, economic, social, cultural, diplomatic, and military history. All the major Russian social groups have apart chapters and the volume also includes surveys on the non-Russian peoples and the government's policies towards them. It addresses themes such as women, law, the Accepted Church, the police and the revolutionary movement. The volume's seven chapters on diplomatic and military intelligence, and on Russia's evolution as a great power, make it the most detailed study of these issues available in English. The contributors wind up successfully from the USA, UK, Russia and Germany: most are internationally recognised as leading scholars in their fields, and some emerging younger academics wrapped up in cutting-edge research have also been included. No other single volume in any language offers so comprehensive, pundit and up-to-date an analysis of Russian history in this period.
