Eröffnet wurden die "Unusual Olympics" im Panathinaikon, dem alten Athener Olympiastadion, in dem einst die ersten Spiele der Neuzeit stattfanden. Es ist die edelste Adresse, die das sportliche Griechenland zu bieten hat. 7500 geistig behinderte Athleten aus 185 Nationen gingen in insgesamt 22 Sportarten, von Judo über Gewichtheben, Schwimmen, Radfahren bis zur Leichtathletik, an den Start. Darunter auch 140 Österreicher. Für alle galt der bekannte Eid: "Lasst mich gewinnen, doch wenn ich nicht gewinnen kann, lasst mich mein Bestes geben."
Erfolgreiches AufgebotKärnten stellte in Athen ein kleines, aber nicht nur feines, sondern auch erfolgreiches Aufgebot: Die fünf Sportler aus der Heimstätte Birkenhof bei Velden und der Diakonie De La Outing/Waiern holten insgesamt vier Gold- und zwei Silbermedaillen.
