The supine of undeniable homoerotica in Shopper’s coming out subject removes any miss to act that this munitions dump about “lads, men and menswear” is kidding aside interested in capturing a heterosexual mainstream audience. It is an fascinating half-breed that combines art guidance evoking a customary gentlemen’s’ three-monthly with map elements and contentment that look to the surreptitious boy cheesecake magazines of the 1950’s for afflatus. Andy Warhol superstar Joe Dallesandro and Sylvia Kristel. Directed by Walerian Borowczyk.
In the opening scenes of the film, Lily (Cathryn Harrison), drives across a French countryside that seems to have devolved into something resembling the Talking Heads ditty, "Life During Wartime", in which men and women in sexless green uniforms execute each other on the side of the road. Rushing to bolt, Lily makes her way to a small farmhouse in the countryside, populated by Old Lady (Therese Giehse), who lays in bed all day, Sister Lily (Alexandra Stewart), and kin Lily (Joe Dallesandro), who sings opera while working in the yard. Because a war without context didn't establish this as an absurdist poem clearly enough, there are also a number of naked children who run around, and a fat grey unicorn. Here, the plot essentially stops, and becomes subservient to a series of images loosely wrapped around Lily's budding sexuality. Well, undoubtedly it's about that; if you're not sure what a movie's about, that's always a good guess.

Little Joe, superstar, the films of Joe Dallesandro |

About this book Norman Mailer punched him, Tennessee Williams had a splinter on him, Annie Liebovitz immortalized him on the cover of Rolling Stone, Lou Reed sang about him, and, in 1982, he was named one of the ten most photogenic men in the period by famed photographer Francesco Scavullo. Now Joe Dallesandro, the sexy, enigmatic superstar of the '60s and '70s experimental film movement, at long last talks -- in detail -- about his life and career. |
