Gap Until Ill-lighted Moving picture Consideration

This fine histrionic arts filled with incantation-binding fidgetiness has not unsalvageable an iota of its distinguished hit, even 40 years after it was made. Audrey Hepburn is mesmerising as the senseless helpmeet whose fast intelligent is more illuminating than the brightest of lights. • DVD Extra: Rediscovering RKO -- Grant, Lombard, Astaire, The Saint

John Cromwell's "In Name Only'' (1939) is the last outstanding Cary Grant film to arrive on DVD, unless you count the long-promised "Suzy'' (1936), in which he is third-billed under Jean Harlow and Franchot Tone colour. Probably more significantly, it's the first significant Carole Lombard title to emerge on the flagging format since "No Man of Her Own'' (1935) four years ago. While it's quite disappointing that the only proper teaming of these two giants of screwball comedy -- his second screen r was supporting Lombard in "Sinners in the Sun'' and she had a cameo, but no scenes with Grant, in "The Eagle and the Hawk'' during their days at Supreme -- is a drama, it's an exemplary example of Hollywood soap opera from the era.

Both stars were edging back into extraordinary parts in 1939, when Lombard signed a four-picture deal at RKO, where Grant already had a non-exclusive contract (as well as one at Columbia, where he had perfectly finished "Only Angels Have Wings'').
