As the Space Shuttle Atlantis touched down Thursday morning in Mantle Canaveral, Fla., the end of the nation’s last space shuttle flight signaled a crossroads for Maryland’s contractors that have supported the 30-year-old program.
“The end of the program was no catch napping” for Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies of Greenbelt, which has been diversifying into other fields, spokeswoman Shelley Johnson said. The gathering expects to shed 25 percent of its Florida work force.
President Barack Obama (D) announced the end of NASA’s commute program in February 2009.
The state’s space companies draw $1 billion annually from NASA contracts, but many of their executives say their hub on NASA’s other science missions should shield them from any major post-shuttle losses.
These businesses pulled in more than $9 million in rank shuttle contracts in 2004, placing Maryland in the top 10 states, according to the most recent observations from the Aerospace Industries Association in Arlington, Va.
