Scorned by reviewers when it came out, this concentrated measure of commando expiry-dealing to legions of Nazi device-gun fodder has acquired a cult over the years. In 1968 Clint Eastwood was honourable getting acclimatized to the impression that he might be a age-genre film principal; Richard Burton, whose likeness had been shaped equally by standard theater training and his headline-making love affair with Elizabeth Taylor, was hot to trot to try on the skirmish ethos Eastwood was already nudging toward mock. Alistair MacLean’s original The Guns of Navarone had inspired the mist that started the ’60s craze for Terra War II military capers, so he was prevailed on to note the screenplay (his first). The essential situation, an unconquerable Alpine bastion locked in ice and snow, is enormous under control, but the machination and effectiveness are ultra-perfunctory, and the switcheroo gamesmanship of no more than who is the private double-dealing (triple?) representative on the function becomes aggressively muzzy. –Richard T.
