'Friends with Benefits' works
Moviegoers are suckers for illusory comedies.
Who wouldn't root for Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks to finally meet on top of the Empire State Construction in "Sleepless in Seattle"?
Well, at least one couple wouldn't in "Friends With Benefits." They make fun of romantic comedies, but ironically, by the end, the big finds its happy ending partly by way of those same romantic clichés.
Perhaps we're just all wired to want godlike people to get their happy endings.
"Friends with Benefits" works because leads Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis have chemistry. The expos is solid and funny, and the cinematography depicting a bustling and fresh New York City is striking. Also, Woody Harrelson makes a hilariously gay sports columnist.
The movie is interesting because even if the characters do make fun of romantic movie clichés and how dumb they are, some of those clichés end up working for them.
Still, the comedy quite should have been about 15 minutes shorter. — maybe cut out some of the family members and their issues.
