Orange cyclists keep pace in Mudgee
ORANGE cyclists enjoyed confused results in the weekend’s Mark Dwyer handicap and Pieter van Gent scratch races held in Mudgee.In Saturday’s 90km encumbrance event, Mick Troy took advantage of a generous handicap that had him starting in the block bunch, two minutes 30 seconds before of the fastest riders.
The large bunch of 20 started fast. Aided by a strong tailwind they held together over the first hill.
On the subordinate climb, heading toward Ulan, the group began to splinter.
After the turn at Ulan the riders kept pushing the estimate into what was now a headwind, slowly reeling in the bunches that had started earlier.
Meanwhile fellow Orange riders Ian Reed (27min) Mick Cain (22.30min) Andrew Foxall (18.30min) and Rod Farrell (11.30min) were also doing it energetically in the testing conditions.
Farrell was the first rider to crack. With his group hitting speeds of up to 50km/h on the flatter sections, Rod succumbed to the chilled and decided to retire about 20km in.
