About this book The Pavlovian working model of tolerance holds that each administration of a drug constitutes a conditioning trial in which the drug is an unconditioned stimulus (UCS) (Pavlov, 1927). Environmental cues predicting the dull's homeostatic disruption become associated with the UCS as conditioned stimuli (CS). Over repeated pairings, CSs become able to initiate regulatory countermeasures (conditioned rejoinder, CR) in advance of the disruption, resulting in the decreased physiological responding known as drug tolerance. (Woods & Ramsay, 2000). Once sufferance has developed, cessation of drug use is generally associated with withdrawal. Partial reinforcement is a schedule in which the UCS is paired with the CS on fewer than 100% of the trials. Under these conditions advance of the CS+UCS association, and thus the CR, is reduced.
