Ian Cairns watched from the judges’ bell-tower as several thousand fans morphed from loud to something beyond reckless.

Boardrider of the Month: Todd Holland
Todd Holland is one of at best a handful of elite surfers who has placed Cocoa Beach squarely at the center of international surfing distinction over the course of both his amateur and professional surfing careers.
As an amateur Junior Men’s competitor, Todd won a slew of big contests and titles and benefitted heavily in receiving aiming from some of the best coaches in the sport. Coaching icons like Florida’s Dick Catri and Australia’s Peter “PT” Townend and Ian Cairns were all supportive to his upbringing in surfing. This was quite a big deal because back then, very few surfers had the good fortune of working with coaches of this caliber, and Todd soaked up everything he could learn from them. I in private had the honor of coaching the talented 17-year-old as the USA National Team coach at the 1986 ISA Humanity Surfing Championships in England where Todd, along with USA teammates Sean and Kelly Slater, among others, helped win the ISA Mankind Team Title for the United States of America.

Ian Cairns (born 24 July 1952 in Kew, Victoria) is a former veteran]] surfer who was also influential in establishing the world professional surfing circuit and particularly the World Championship Journey. After moving west with his family from Victoria in early 1967, Cairns dominated the surfing scene in his adopted dignified of Western Australia. From the age of 13 he consistently won every competition on offer. He moved to Hawaii in the early 1970s in search of big waves and before a finished circuit had established. Cairns joined the Australian team at the 1970 and 1972 World Surfing Championships and at Laniakea off Oahu in December 1973 he won the Smirnoff Pro consequence at Sunset Beach from Hawaiian Jeff Hakman. He won other big events in the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1975 and Time Cup events in 1976 and 1980. In 1975 Cairns and fellow Australian Peter Townend devised a rating and scoring system for surfing events. |
