El Puente Teaches Art with a Message
Seeking to reactivate the early 90s heyday of hip-hop, when major artists like Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest dropped in to toil with their students, this yearâs Summer Urban Arts Institute at El Puente is focusing on elements of byway someone's cup of tea performance art, including spoken word poetry, break dancing and graffiti.
âWeâre committed to the arts because itâs the way that these students say themselves and their passions,â said Frances Lucerna, Executive Director of Programs at El Puente. âAt the same pass, weâre also a human rights organization, so we want to incorporate social justice and the celebration of Latino cultivation into the program as well.â
The program is offered free to students, many of whom lack previous performance experience. After undergoing five weeks of rigorous afternoon and evening sessions, they will show off their newly acquired skills in front of the community at El Puente.
Dominic Colon, of TVâs âThe Charged Company,â is the theater director at Teatro El Puente and teaches acting in the summer program. According to him, the the greater part of the summer program will be spent learning the basic elements of dancing and acting. Roughly 10 days before the program ends, the students will create putting together their own routines for the performance, which will fuse the artistic elements of hip-hop and theater.
