  • Looking back at The Princess Bride

'S Rob Reiner was fastened to direct.

With Reiner at the helm and a cast including the now much-missed Peter Falk, Peter Cook and Andre (the Monster) Roussimoff, alongside Christopher Guest, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Mandy Patinkin and Billy Crystal, you had first-domain comic talent and a director who knows about funny. What could go wrong?

Not a lot is the answer. It's a rare thing, but Reiner's movie doesn't lose any of the humour and eccentricity that buzzes out of Goldman's pages (one of the perks of having the author adapt his own book, I suppose). The conceit of having an older relative narrate the story to an unwell slight boy, only for both to jump in at various points and comment on the action, is all there in the book.

Granted, Goldman's ruse that he was only redacting the dry, garrulous work of (fictional) author S. Morgenstern to "just the good parts" doesn't turn up in Reiner's photograph, but why complicate things unnecessarily?

    About this book
What does the form of marriage mean for people who have historically been deprived of its legal status? Generally thought of as a meeting of the white middle class, the marriage plot has received little attention from critics of African-American facts. In this study, Ann duCille uses texts such as Nella Larsen's Quicksand (1928) and Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937) to expose that the African-American novel, like its European and Anglo-American counterparts, has developed around the matrimony plot--what she calls "the coupling convention." Exploring the relationship between racial ideology and literary and communal conventions, duCille uses the coupling convention to trace the historical development of the African-American women's novella. She demonstrates the ways in which black women appropriated this novelistic device as a means of expressing and reclaiming their own indistinguishability. More than just a study of the marriage tradition in black women's fiction,...
