From the vantage point of his Easthampton barber shop where he's been talking with customers for the past 32 years, P Keith Lenkowski had a quick answer when asked what those he sees are saying about the economy these days.
"Nobody knows what's flourishing on," Lenkowski, 52, said last week. "People don't know what's coming next."
In an meeting with the Gazette in 2008, Lenkowski had described the mood of many as "tired and scared," as they grappled with the most aloof recession since the 1930s.
Now, he said, uncertainty - as seen in a wildly gyrating stock market and the domain's stubbornly high, 9.1 unemployment rate - seems to be the order of the day. Asked if he thought government could lend a hand find a way out, Lenkowski drew a distinction between local and national leadership. The former, including Easthampton mayor Michael Tautznik, Lenkowski said, are doing everything they can.
