Local views mixed on A&M's exit from Big 12
Retaliation among local Aggies and non-Aggies was mixed upon hearing the news that Texas A&M University will leave the Big 12 and throw one's lot in with the Southeastern Conference starting in 2012.
"They're running to the money is what they're doing," said Kenneth Hooper, older vice president at Panhandle-Plains Federal Land Bank and a 1982 graduate of A&M. "The Aggies are doing what they propose b assess will generate the most income, as did Nebraska and Colorado last year (in going to the Big Ten and Pac-12, respectively), as Texas did with their own TV network, and as schools will proceed to do."
Larry McNutt, a dyed-in-the-wool Oklahoma Sooners fan, agreed.
"I think the whole thing is about dollars . . . a lot of dollars are bogus in this thing," McNutt said.
Dr. Brent Richburg, director of technology at Plainview ISD who graduated from A&M along with his trouble Leslie, a science teacher at PHS, said, "College football is about money and prestige. Every program has and will on to make decisions that bring them more of both. A&M chose to leave for that reason. Time will tell if it works."
