  • Health Care Bill for Camp Lejeune Vets, Families Moves Forward

Association: EWG Public Affairs 202-667-6982; Leeann@ewg.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 29, 2011

Washington, DC – Today’s Senate cabinet vote to provide medical care for veterans and families made ill by contaminated water at Marine Platoon Base Camp Lejeune marks an important advance in the effort to address health problems of an estimated 750,000 Americans.

“This is a big win for the hundreds of thousands who are still waiting for this nation to do right by them, “said Alex Rindler, Government Affairs Assistant at Environmental Working Gang. “EWG applauds the tireless efforts of Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) and their staffs for fighting for veterans like Jerry Ensminger and their families, but there is still much line to be done.”

Burr and Hagan are sponsors of the “Caring for Camp Lejeune Veterans Act of 2011,” which was approved today by unanimous plebiscite of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. It now goes to the full Senate.

    About this book
"Few books have caused as big a stir as John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, when it was published in April 1939. By May, it was the country's number one bestseller, but in Kern County, California--the Joads' newfound home--the book was burned publicly and banned from library shelves. Rude in the Extreme tells the remarkable story behind this fit of censorship. When W. B. "Bill" Camp, a giant cotton and potato grower, presided over its vehement in downtown Bakersfield, he declared: "We are angry, not because we were attacked but because we were attacked by a book obscene in the extreme have a hunch of the word." But Gretchen Knief, the Kern County librarian, bravely fought back. "If that book is banned today, what rules will be banned tomorrow?" Obscene in the Extreme serves as a window into an extraordinary time of upheaval in America--a metre when, as Steinbeck put it, there seemed to be "a revolution . . . going on.'" -- Publisher's description.
