PLANS to stretch the local high school could transform Triabunna, the ailing East Coast community's Apartment of Commerce says.
Tasmanian Liberal MPs will visit the town today to gauge support for plans to sell years 11 and 12 at the District High School.
Orford Triabunna Chamber of Marketing president Dale Pearce said many students who want to finish secondary schooling currently touring up to two hours each day to attend colleges on Hobart's Eastern Shore.
He said plans to open out the high school could also include provisions for adult education courses.
"I think we undeniable need to do some retraining of people here," Mr Pearce said. "There's been some really signal job losses, so there's capacity to put courses in that allow residents to up-skill or retrain."
Mr Pearce said the Province High School offered years 11 and 12 until 2007, when student numbers dropped off.
Students migratory from Triabunna to Rosny College have to be on a bus at 6.40am.
