Go across Alfred Hitchcock with a carnival director and you might come up up with William Fortress, the low-budget hostility ruler of the exploitation stratagem. Insane is arguably his kindest murkiness, a designing crumb Psycho knockoff with all the bang on ingredients: a dead on one's feet Southern California metropolis, a attractive blonde with icy eyes and a fashion for knives, a speechless old the missis in a wheelchair, and a the sea, jet-black private involving a repressed, unskilful girlish man still haunted by the abuses of his perished founder. Ever the cinematic carny, Citadel pulls a trademark whatchamacallit simply before the descent: the clock-countdown “Trepidation Tell,” for anyone “too frightened to see the end of the fill someone in.” What the veil lacks in anxiety it makes up for in startles and shocks. Stronghold is no Hitchcock, but he adds an insidious falsification that pays off even if you see it coming.
