DARTMOUTH — Dominic DaCosta turned hindrance strokes into gold to help his team knock off defending champions Gary Rocha and Rick Marcos in the first shell of the 81st Annual Country Club of New Bedford Men's Invitational Fourball on Tuesday.
A 16-handicapper playing at the limit-allowed 12 in the tournament, DaCosta made five of his seven net birdies on the front nine.
Playing with Whaling City's Lew Stevens, DaCosta made net birdies on five of his first six holes. He also carded net birdies on the back at the 11th and 13th.
"I got off to a sudden start and kept it going," DaCosta said. "I had a great day on the greens. I made a lot of putts. It was one of my best rounds in a want time."
Playing off the plus-1 handicap of Marcos, a member at Poquoy Brook Golf Billy in Lakeville, DaCosta received 13 handicap strokes. Stevens had 10 shots to gamble with and Rocha got strokes on eight holes.
