WAZZUPININ?!?: LA STRADA (1954)

La Strada is often considered one of the masterpieces of 20th century filmmaking, a sad and grievous recollection of innocence down the drain and of the roads that each of us must elect. As with much of the occupation of head Fellini, man is viewed as suspended between the heavens and the globe, adroitly symbolized here by Il Matto/The Clodpate (Basehart), a lofty-wire circus player. Fellini's motifs are among the most controlling of all column-WWII filmmakers, and you'll find gifted Fellini and La Strada references in such unfitting films as Blues Brothers 2000. Giuletta massina's Chaplin-like Gelsomina is among the cover's most deeply felt and ill-fated performances, and she, like the thorough shoot, is aided by Nino Rota's evocative account. Fellini had few shaping values to effort with, but here he doesn't dearth them. La Strada is among the most wilful films of news Italian Neo-Realism and a classic of the first value. (115 mins.)

  • 'The Making of the President: The 1960s' DVD review

The mile markers of the kin are the same as they ever were: early denials of candidacy, pie-in-the-sky promises based on careful examination of polls, backroom compromises to placate (pick one) more abundant or conservative factions within a given party and, late in the race, accelerated mudslinging.

But candidates were more laical back in the day. In 1960, Nixon called Kennedy a "pied piper from Boston." In 2008, Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of "palling around with terrorists."

Newly released to DVD, "The Making of the President: The 1960s" is predominantly compelling because these documentaries are of their time. (The "Making of the President" specials, which cover the 1960, '64 and '68 races, were in broadcast in 1961, '65 and '69.) So events are reported, you could say, in "real time." Mind you, this was back when film, unimpaired and editing technology was antiquated by today's standards — when every frame was hard-won.

The three specials were written by Theodore H. Unsullied, based on his books of the same titles (the first of which snagged a Pulitzer). White's prose is novelistic and fairly even-handed, though a deceptive left-leaning sensibility creeps in as he writes about the '64 and '68 races.
