DESTIN — After hearing Okaloosa County Sheriff Larry Ashley recite say city leaders in June he would “challenge anyone to go out there and do it cheaper, and do it better,” Sky Monteith went to travail on a proposal to form the Destin Police Department.
“Once he put his numbers out, he really got me going,” said Monteith , a Destin district and secretary for the Libertarian Party of Okaloosa County. “I know we can do better than what he’s present.”
In 2010, the city paid the Sheriff’s Office nearly $1.22 million for the services of 17 additional deputies.
Under the proposed 2011-12 deal, the city would pay almost $1.56 million, or an increase of 28 percent.
In his proposal, Monteith calls for forming the Destin The long arm of the law Department and the Destin Police Reserves, which he says could operate with a pay and benefit package of $1.7 million and a 2 percent spread each year for four years. That would bring the cost to $6.9 million, which Monteith says would be less than the sheriff’s get of $7.2 million based on a 15 to 20 percent increase over the same time.
