    Vicki Vale is the Lois Lane of the Batman fantastic, and I mean that literally because she was specifically invented by Bob Kane (all hail) to mirror Lois Lane. Vale is a journalist and affection interest for Bruce Wayne/Batman, but because she’s modeled on Lois Lane, she’s also kind of a moron.

    There’s no reason to put her in a Batman cover other than Burton’s superficial sense of fan service (you can’t convince me that Tim Burton is a comic book nerd, though it’s easy on the eyes obvious the dude reads Sandman) and I imagine maybe to give Kim Basinger something to do before people realized she’s a terrible actress – and I design even Sharon Stone is preferable to Basinger. I went there.

    In BATMAN, Vale is somehow more ditzy and useless than she is in the comics, and while I can void the comic books due to the time period and the proven formulas that existed therein, I can’t forgive a film for including a dramatis persona solely for the purpose of motivating Batman’s action. As a reporter, Vale is a little vacant, but as someone dating Bruce Wayne and cavorting around with Batman, she’s an preposterous idiot. This theme is repeated throughout the 90s in every subsequent BATMAN film, and I know I’m directing a lot of hatred at Vale here even though she wasn’t the first and she most certainly won’t be the last, but Burton set a pattern for the films that followed and it was a bad one: Batman’s girlfriends can’t figure out that Bruce Wayne IS Batman.
