Jack (Nonpareil) Dempsey/John M Ward Mousepads

John Edward Kelly (born December 15, 1862, Curran, County Kildare, Ireland died November 2, 1895, Portland, Oregon, U.S.) was an Irish-born boxer. Better known as Jack (Nonpareil) Dempsey, called "Nonpareil", because no one could defeat him. He was defeated only three times out of 65 contests. This ended when Bob Fitzsimmons pummelled him around the ring and begged him to concede before he was hurt any more. But Dempsey, the reigning champion, wouldn't give up so Fitzsimmons knocked him out.
Dempsey was born on December 15, 1862 in Curran, County Kildare, Ireland.
Dempsey died of tuberculosis at age 33, on November 1, 1896, at the Portland, Oregon, United States home of his wife's parents. He was buried in an unmarked grave at Mount Calvary Cemetery. M. James Brady, Dempsey's father-in-law, refused to permit former World Champion John L. Sullivan and John S. Barnes to raise funds to erect a monument over Dempsey's grave. The family believed that the four-foot marble shaft was a sufficient memorial. The matter was thus dropped.
Dempsey was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954, and into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992.-------------John Montgomery Ward (March 3, 1860 – March 4, 1925) was an American Major League Baseball star pitcher, shortstop and manager. Ward was born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Renovo, Pennsylvania. He later successfully challenged the player reserve clause, leading to the formation of a new baseball league, the Players' League.

Jack Johnson - Case

John Arthur (Jack) Johnson (March 31, 1878 – June 10, 1946), nicknamed the “Galveston Giant”, was an American boxer, the second African American Boxing Champion, and the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908–1915). Johnson was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954, and is on the roster of both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2005, the United States National Film Preservation Board deemed the film of the 1910 Johnson-Jeffries fight "historically significant" and put it in the National Film Registry. Johnson's skill as a fighter and the money that it brought made it impossible for him to be ignored by the establishment. In the short term, the boxing world reacted against Johnson's legacy. But Johnson foreshadowed, in many ways, perhaps one of the most famous boxers of all time, Muhammad Ali. In fact, Ali often spoke of how he was influenced by Jack Johnson. Ali identified with Johnson because he felt America ostracized him in the same manner because of his opposition to the Vietnam War and affiliation with the Nation of Islam. In his autobiography, Ali relates how he and Joe Frazier agreed that Johnson and Joe Louis were the greatest boxers of all. In 2002, scholar Molefi Kete Asante listed Jack Johnson on his list of 100 Greatest African Americans. In September, 2008, 62 years after Johnson's death, the United States Congress passed a resolution to recommend that the President grant a pardon for his 1913 conviction of cohabitation with a white woman, in acknowledgment of its racist overtones, and in order to exonerate Johnson and recognize his contribution to boxing. In April 2009, John McCain of Arizona joined Representative Peter T. King of New York in a call for a posthumous pardon for the boxing legend by President Barack Obama. Repro pub dom.
